When Platoons and companies engage 5 or 6 VC, they request gunship and arty; this is not correct-Platoon must do the work. Platoon leaders, once they receive fire must estimate the situation, develop it, fire and maneuver--be aggressive!!! Don’t wait for supporting fires-------Go after the Dinks before they break contact and disappear into their holes. It is wrong for 1 or 2 snipers to hold up an Americal Platoon.

Observed air strikes in TF Barker AO; was extremely pleased and a great deal of confidence in the Air Force’s ability to place an air strike within 200M of friendly troops. Felt that dropping 750 LBS bombs brought fine results and is safer than arty. Use air strikes whenever possible.
