Received message DIVARTY CO LNO at Quang Ngai thru Brigade: Son Tinh District had RF-PF positions overrun by a estimated 2 companies or 1 Battalion of VC, who are to be believed to be at the contact location. Quang Ngai HQ has contacted Americal Division Headquarters, to see about getting US forces to establish a blocking position from grid  square  BS7178 to BS6880.

Bravo Company's 3rd platoon at grid coordinates BS734873, found 3 gas masks, parts to US mines, 1 empty medical pouch, 4 canisters of unknown type: will be extracted back to LZ Dottie.

01 May 68 1638

Bravo Company's 3rd platoon at grid coordinates BS726869, apprehended 1 VC w/pistol belt, canteen, claymore bag full of medical supplies. He was of military age and is being questioned by Bravo Company at BS726869 location.

Alpha Company's mortar platoon requests a dust off for 1 US EM WHA from Alpha Company due to detonating mine of unknown type. A urgent dust off was completed at 1821 hrs. at grid coordinates BS474863.

  • At 1810 hrs on May 1, 1968 Alpha Company 4-3 Infantry Mortar Platoon in the vicinity of BS474863 detonated a mine of unknown type with 1 US WHA evacuation Dust Off was completed at 1821 hrs. At 1834 hrs Alpha Company Mortar Platoon requested Dust Off for another US WHA as result of mine category priority completed at 1850 hrs. E-4 Peters, George Evac wounded in both legs and arms  Peters was a  DOA and became KHA. E4 Akutgawa, Mark has frag wounds in back member of the Recon Platoon. Recon was returning to the Battalion TOC after cutting down tree’s and clearing the road just outside the perimeter.

Alpha Company's Mortar platoon requests a dust off for another US WHA, as a result of a mine.A category priority dust off was completed at 1850 hrs.

At 1835 hrs. Recon platoon, just completed blowing and clearing trail, which led to the main trail. Element was returning back to the top when incident occurred. Mine was approximately 6' from a bangalore torpedo.

At 2110 hrs. Alpha Company's 3rd platoon, 1st squad, reported that 1 M-26A1 grenade was thrown into their position at grid coordinates BS548889. Grenade was picked up and thrown back. Negative casualties on friendlies, element moved to grid coordinates BS550887.

01 May 68 Summary

Operations continued as normal throughout the MUSCATINE AO with Co A securing LZ Sue. Co B search Ville at BS734864. Co C secure and assist construction of FSB vic. BS538825. ( Editors note: This grid will receive the name LZ BUFF on May 5, 1968) Co D security for LZ Dottie and Uptight. Recon clearing mines and Booby traps OP George. Recon platoon suffered 2 US WHA result Booby trap.

At 0733 hrs. Charlie Company's 2nd platoon, at grid location BS541816, detonated a M16A1 bouncing Betty anti-personnel mine resulting in; 1 US KHA, & 2 US WHA. Dust off was requested at 0733 hrs. and completed at 0755 hrs.

At 1005 hrs. Maj Holck, S-3, directed 1st platoon E Troop to move to grid location BS602864 in order to assist the PF  outpost, now receiving fire.

02 May 68 2055

Charlie Company's CP reports that it is receiving mortar fire (unknown type) fro grid location BS538824. Element had 15 incoming rounds, and returned fire w/ 81mm mortars. Firing lasted a estimated 5 minutes. Charlie Company's Commander estimated mortar were 60mm & fire originated at grid location BS546811. No casualties were sustained by Charlie Company.

02 May 68 2137

Charlie Company reports now receiving accurate incoming mortar fire. Commander believes rounds are 82mm. Have estimated receiving 20 rounds from the same location. 

02 May 68 2215

At 2155 hrs. Charlie Company reported receiving a estimated 12-15 rounds of 81mm, at 2-3 minute intervals; majority of rounds landed within 20-30 meters of the 2nd platoon sector, Arty & organic 81mm were fired. No US casualties & no assessment of enemy loss. Will check contact area at first light.

03 May 68 0050

Battalion Aid Station reports 1 US WHA from Delta Company, received a gunshot wound in his left hand as a result of small arms fire. Report his bunker his bunker received 10-15 rounds of sniper fire. Dust off requested at 0735 hrs. and completed at 0854 hrs.

Alpha Company's 3rd platoon, at grid coordinates BS557900, observed 1 VC evading  &  3rd platoon engaged. Results; 1 VC KIA. A bag of documents, 1 change of clothes, 1 VC flag, 1 compass, 2 bottles of liquid and 1 M26A1 frag (grenade had a different type of fuse). Will take pictures and destroy grenade in place.

03 May 68 1100

At 0942 hrs. Delta Company at grid coordinates BS720814, detonated a mine resulting in 1 US WHA. Type of mine is unknown. Delta Company requests a dust  for 1 US w/ frag wounds in leg & hip. Dust off requested at 0942 hrs & completed at 1000 hrs. Mine and Booby Trap Incident Report sent to Brigade.

03 May 68 1201

At 1157 hrs. 1st platoon E Troop located and destroyed 1 60mm round  on the road in the vincinty of grid BS630830. Round not booby trapped.

03 May 68 1835

At 1835 hrs. Charlie Company received 10-15 rounds of sniper fire, from grid location BS547812, resulting in 1 US EM WHA, Line #  85  received a flesh wound in the arm from sniper. 81mm mortar fire was called in , with unknown results. Dust off requested at 1815 hrs. and completed at 1830 hrs.

03 May 68 1800

At 1800 hrs, a water buffalo attacked a soldier from Delta Company. The water buffalo was shot and the VN people demanded money for the loss. Bn S-5 suggests they pay 500-1000 VN$ and pay owner only if he can produce a ID card.

At 1927 hrs. Alpha Company's 3rd platoon in the vicinity of grid BS567905, detonated a mine of unknown type, resulting in; 6 US WHA.

Received report on Americal Division activity from SFC Gross, CO-S-3 Brigade duty NCO; All quiet except an element from 3/1 Infantry, received 10-15 rounds of small arms sniper fire resulting in 3 US WHA.

Delta Company's 2nd platoon at grid coordinates BS721821, located and destroyed 1  155mm HE round & 1  105mm illumination round.

At 1030 hrs. Delta Company's 2nd platoon, at grid location BS 721821, found & destroyed 1 M26A1 mine with pressure release type firing device, AN8173-A1.

04 May 68 1306

Alpha Company at grid location BS568887, reports a sudden change of attitude of the civilians in An Diem village complex. They have changed from being friendly toward Americans to displaying a hostile attitude. Binh Son District Agents presently checking village.

04 May 68 1935

Request a dust off for 1 US EM w/a broken ankle at grid location BS732822. Called in for a Chu Lai dust off at 1928 hrs. and completed at 148 hrs.

04 May 68 2010

Delta Company at grid location BS731822, received 3 incoming hand grenades and small arms fire. Estimate hand grenades  landed 100 meters from CP location.

05 May 68 0206

At 0201 hrs. Delta Company's 1st platoon in the vicinity of grid BS722825, and received 10 incoming rounds that are believed to be 60mm mortars and resulting in 1 US WHA (slight wound -ing  neck , no dust off required).

05 May 68 0223

Delta Company reports 2 US WHA. 1-w/shrapnel in right knee. 1- w/ shrapnel in left leg. Both are minor and did not require a dust off. Results are 3 US WHA from mortar attacks.

05 May 68 0645

Dust off was requested for 1 US WHA, frag wounds in chest, stomach and legs. Dust off completed at 0655 hrs.

Aero Scouts, at grid coordinates BS795848, apprehended 1 male VCS, 17-25 years old. VCS was hiding in the bush and wearing US fatigue trousers.

1st platoon E Troop on north bridge, at grid location BS624865 reported that Highway # 1 of bridge is closed. Also Binh Son District is on 100% alert, Also District report they are under attack by an enemy force of 100 VC at grid coordinates BS 602863. Aero Scouts are making aerial recon of the area. Negative results at this time.

Weapons & Ammo collected from children on May 5, 1968; 18 rounds of 60mm mortar HE, 24  M26 frag grenades, 1 M16A1 AP mine, 4 40mm , 7800 .30 cal rounds, 1600 rounds of 5.56mm, 1 M51A5 fuse, 1 81mm mortar round & 1 tube of C-4.

At 0201 hrs. Delta Company's 1st platoon at grid coordinates BS722825, received 10 incoming rounds and believed to be 60mm mortars resulting in; 1 US WHA (slight wound in neck, no dust off required).

06 May 68 0223

Delta Company reports 2 additional US WHA (1 w/shrapnel in right knee, 1 w/ shrapnel in left leg). Both were minor and did not require dust off. Results of mortar attack; 3 US WHA.

Final report regarding mortar attack on LZ Bronco; Commenced 0258 hrs. ceased 0353 hrs. Received approximately 60 incoming rounds of 82mm & 60mm mortar, 10 satchel charges resulting in 1 US KHA.

Summary of Mortar Attack on LZ Bronco; received 64 mortar rounds, 10 satchel charges, 8 dud 82mm mortar rouns & 3 RPG's 7 found. NVA were inside perimeter last night. Individual came in under the wire. Hand grenades were thrown into the tents & bunkers, and satchel charges were thrown. (1-2 lbs of TNT w/string fuse). Homemade grenades were used with junk inside. NVA PW reports; is 18 years old and an NVA pvt,and has been here one month and with the 398th NVA Regiment and had exact maps and sketches of our perimeter.

At 0956 hrs. Delta Company at grid location BS722824 (last night's NDP) 5 cartridges 40mm (M-79 ammo) which appear to be fired by VC in last night's attack; Also found a few strings, possibly from chicom or homemade grenades.

06 May 68 1020

At 1047 hrs, Delta Company's 2nd platoon, grid location BS 724824, found 1 ammo can in a haystack. Destroyed can & observed secondary explosion. Also at this location, another  ammo can of documents, some which displayed the seal of Son Tinh District.

Delta Company's 2nd platoon apprehended 1 male VCS, military age w/o ID card, hiding in a tunnel at grid location BS 718888. Extracted to LZ Dottie for interrogation.

07 May 68 0935

Delta Company's 2nd platoon, grid coordinates BS719890, found 3 VC hiding in a tunnel. A grenade was thrown into the tunnel resulting in a secondary explosion and WIA/CIA. VC dusted off.

07 May 68 1401

Delta Company's 2nd platoon, at grid location BS719890, apprehended 1 VC 45-50 years old, w/o ID card. No weapon or web gear, but in possession of documents.

07 May 68 2100

At 1851 hrs. Alpha Company's 2nd platoon, at grid location BS 555898, detonated a mine w/secondary explosion 50 meters away, resulting in; 4 US WHA, 1 US KHA (no casualties from second explosion). Dust off requested at 1851 hrs. and completed at 1900 hrs.

Charlie Company requests a dust off for 1 US EM from Charlie Company with a  gun shot wound to foot.

Aero Scouts, in the vicinity of grid BS473877, engaged 5 VC evading (1 VC w/weapon which was disposed of while evading). Results; 1 VC KIA & 4 CIA.

08 May 68 1925

Delta Company report at 1917hrs. received 4-5 rounds of incoming mortar fire, at grid location BS720888; also received automatic weapons fire, resulting in 1 US KHA & 1 US WHA. Mortar rounds impacted 50 meters West of the perimeter. Urgent dust off requested at 1920 hrs. & completed at 1940 hrs.

Reference item # 47 from May 8, 68 at 1925 hrs.; Delta Company is searching contact area and of a result, found blood trails and 30 rounds of expended .30caliber M1 ammo.

09 May 68 0730

Delta Company reports finding 1 M-16E1 rifle, serial # 707888. Contacted Chu Lai Dust off Control & they stated the weapon belongs to their unit. Rifle was lost when dust off was being conducted for Delta Company.

09 May 68 1124

1st platoon E Troop, at grid coordinates BS688893, located 2 tunnels complexes. Engaged 1 VC in tunnel resulting in 1 VC KIA. Presently continuing search of tunnels.                                1200                                                                                                       1st platoon E Troop, at the grid coordinates of BS688893, apprehended 1 male VCS, military age and with out ID card. Extracted to LZ Dottie for interrogation.

09 May 68 1312

Alpha Company's 2nd platoon, at grid coordinates BS565902, were conducting a search of the area with a 16 year old VN boy as a guide. The boy led them towards a bunker at which time 2VC evaded. Located in bunker was 1 VC, who was CIA. 1 VC w/weapon evaded across The Tra Bong River, one evaded into a cane field. VC were taken under fire with possible 1 VC WIA. Also at this location 6 VCS were apprehended. VCS will be interrogated at present location. VC extracted to LZ Dottie.

09 May 68 1935

Delta Company's 1st platoon, 1st squad had a small stay behind ambush at grid coordinates BS720850. Ambush was sprung on 6 VC w/weapons resulting in 2 VC KIA. In their possession were several grenades and a map (type of grenades unknown). 

09 May 68 2110

Bravo Company's 1st platoon, while moving to the ambush site, observed approximately 20-25 VC with weapons at coordinates BS639825. VC were out of s/a range and moving away from ambush element. Arty was requested on grid location BS641824 & grid square BS631825, with unknown results.

Delta Company's 1st platoon, at grid coordinates BS725896, apprehended 2 male VCS that were evading. One between 20-25 years old w/o ID card. Will be interrogated on the spot.

10 May 68 1914

Delta Company received a large volume of small arms fire, approximately 10 rounds of M-79 fire & 3 or 4 mortar rounds, from grid square BS7088. Negative casualties. Fire ceased upon return fire.

10 May 68 1935

Delta Company's 2nd squad, 3rd platoon killed 1 VC with weapon that was approximately 300 meters South of their NDP position. Element was unable to recover weapon at this time.

11 May 68 1005

1st platoon E Troop, at grid coordinates BS689888, located and destroyed 2 punji pits. Punji pits were well camouflaged on the trail, w/dimensions 1' x 1' x 1'.

11 May 68 1045

Delta Company's 2nd platoon, at grid location BS702879, received 2-3 rounds of sniper fire. Result; 1 US WHA, request dust off  for Russell from Delta Company w/a wound to the left thigh. Extracted to LZ Dottie for treatment.

1st platoon E Troop, at grid coordinates BS688904, detonated 2 anti-personnel mines (1 was a bouncing Betty) w/negative casualties. M-113 APC was slightly damaged.

11 May 68 1716

At 1609 hrs. 1st platoon E Troop at grid location BS688904, reports 1 of their M-113 APC's ran over 1 male VCS, that was evading. VCS received a broken arm and required a dust off.

11 May 68 1825

At 1700 hrs. Co E found 1 SKS rifle at grid location BS623866. Rifle serial # 361753.

11 May 68 2002

Son Tinh District reports the bridge at grid coordinates BS633811 was attacked by VC and presently is unguarded. Advise extreme caution when using this bridge tomorrow.

11 May 68 2400

Update

At 1927 hrs on May 3, 1968 Alpha Company 4-3 Infantry 3rd Platoon in the vicinity of BS567905 detonated a mine, a type unknown, resulting in 6 US WHA. Personnel were as follows; 2LT Ransom, Robert C. Jr shrapnel wounds in abdomen and right arm ( KHA Died of Wounds on May 11, 1968 ). SGT Hake, Alan right leg and right arm, fractured leg condition serious, SGT Shelton, Timothy E. shrapnel in right arm, SP/4 Sloan, Gradvillo R. shrapnel wounds in calf, PFC Estep, Michael shrapnel wounds in arms and legs, PFC Czech, Edward M. received shrapnel wounds in right arms.

12 May 68 0815

At 0800 hrs. Aero Scouts engaged with 6 VC evading grid in vincinty of BS554759, resulting in 4 VC KIA.                                 0820                                                                                                         At 0815 hrs. 4/3 Infantry , C&C ship engaged 2 VC evading grid location BS554759, resulting in 2 VC KIA.

12 May 68 0822

At 0800 hrs. Alpha Company detonated a pressure type device at grid location BS563711, which was rigged to a 4.2 mortar round. No casualties. Round was destroyed by Alpha Company at 0810 hrs. Alpha Company had 1 US slightly wounded in foot when he fell into a punji pit at grid location BS563771. Pit was destroyed.

12 May 68 0915

Alpha Company at grid location BS566770, 1 VC tripped what appeared to be booby trapped M16A1 mine, Results; 1 VC KIA  &  4 US WHA. 3 minor not evacuated.

At 1105 hrs. Charlie Company reports observing Helix 33 (FAC Aircraft) going down at grid location BS580802. C&C ship checked area and at 1114 hrs. spotted downed aircraft at grid location BS580802. Investigation revealed that pilot and co-pilot were killed (observer).

At 1120 hrs. LTC Adkins (Battalion Commander), at grid coordinates BS 580802, reports C&C ship received s/a fire. C&C took 1 hit resulting in 1 US WHA (SGM Dorough received a gun shot wound in the right foot) Extracted to LZ Dottie and medevaced. Engaged resulting in 1 VC KIA.

Alpha Company's 1st platoon, at grid location BS557768, made contact w/3 VC and resulting in 1 VC KIA. Continuing search for the other 2. Also found one 38 cal pistol. serial # V410295: 1 document, 1 medical bag, 1 web belt, 1 M-26 frag grenade.

12 May 68 1845

Alpha Company at grid location BS563769, received 3-4 incoming 60mm mortar rounds. Resulting in; 1 US WHA for shrapnel wounds-not serious. Not evacuated..Also observed 10 VC evading, took under fire w/negative results.

At 0826 hrs. Alpha Company's 3rd platoon tripped a booby trap at grid location BS566766, resulting in 2 US WHA (urgent). Dust off completed at 0841 hrs. 

13 May 68 0940

The Booby trap was made of a grenade placed in an earthen jar. Trip wire was strung across trail.

13 May 68 1150

Alpha Company's 3rd platoon at grid location BS568773, found and destroyed 1 dud 105mm round lying in the trail and was not booby trapped. Also at grid location BS568772, found 1 booby trap that consisted of 2 bamboo slats with cardboard under -neath.

13 May 68 1920

Alpha Company received 3-4 rounds of small arms fire at grid location BS564779, resulting in 1 US WHA (shot in thigh). Dust off requested at 1925 hrs. & completed at 1953 hrs.

Received Report from Echo Company, that 3 men were burnt by a 4.2" ignition cartridge. Received 1st & 2nd degree burns in the face, on hands, neck & arms. One of the individual will be medevaced first thing in the morning.

At 0700 hrs. C&C helicopter made a aerial recon of North & South bridges. C&C ship reports that the north bridge at grid coordinates BS623865 was destroyed.

The 5 individuals drove into a village which is located some- where between Chu Lai and Hill 69, which is the 1/46 Infantry firebase. They parked the jeep outside of a laundry and went inside. While inside, some Vietnamese villagers got into the jeep drove it down the street, whereupon it struck a Vietnamese boy and then overturned.The boy had both legs severed in the accident. Individuals were taken into custody by the Military Police. Sp/4 Jones &Sp/4 Jeffers are still missing.

At 0800 hrs on May 20, 1968 Alpha Company 4-3 Infantry on a Sweep and Clear Operation at grid BS786862. Wounded 1 VC in foot, and at 0810 hrs. had CIA 1 VC Male at grid BS 776862. At 0810 hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon detonated a booby trap and at 1005 hrs they have received 5 US KHA and 18 US WHA with 10 US WHA evac to the 27 Surgical and 8 US WHA med evacuation to 2nd Surgical Hospital. Personnel were med evacuated by Aero Scouts and completed at 1030 hrs. At 1200 hrs A Company at BS775862 reports they have detonated a booby trap with results of 1 US KHA and 2 WHA. after marching for 2 hours and completing sweep along beach, 3rd platoon took a break. Dust off requested for Recon platoon at OP George; for 1 US w/shrapnel wound in back. Circumstances; a PF was burning brush around OP George; the fire became uncontrollable & spread up the North side of OP George. There were 15-20 secondary explosions. Lt Kendrix, platoon leader, moved his men to the opposite side of the hill, into bunkers, to protect them from the explosions. Personnel had to return to the area of fire, because fire had encompassed several of their bunkers. While fighting the fires in a bunker, one man was injured. It is not clear whether man received a shrapnel wound in the back or cut his back while jumping away from the explosion. Fire is now under control. 2 bunkers were destroyed.

LZ Bronco Update; 

LZ Bronco May 29 1968 received 100+ 82mm mortar rounds; total casualties; 2 US KHA  &  41 US WHA (7 evacuated ). KHA were from the 11th Signal and 174th Avn. Damage to material; 1  02 aircraft w/minor damage, 1 w/major damage; 1 UH-1D aircraft w/minor damage, 1 w/major damage (Primo). 1 UH-1D w/minor damage (174th Avn) A&D Dental took direct hits. Primo supply tent leveled. 6 FLA's damaged. 126th Engineers sustained damage to several pieces of equipment. IT is believed that the 406 Sapper Battalion south of Duc Pho took part in the attack.

Delta Company requests a dust off for 1 US EM from Delta Company with shrapnel wounds in legs. Individual was in tunnel setting a charge to blow entrance; on the way out the tunnel the individual slipped and fell back into tunnel and charge exploded causing shrapnel wounds to legs.

Utility helicopter from the 174 Aviation Battalion at grid coordinates BS496800, and helicopter received 20 rounds of automatic fire while re-supplying Delta Company. The direction of the fire is unknown, and no return fire. There were no casualties and no damage to the aircraft.

Alpha Company on LZ Dottie found a dud grenade, type is unknown due to corrosion. The grenade was found forward of Bunker # 10. Will destroy tomorrow.

Gun & Flare ships off station; results of mission; Sank 35-40 sampans; engaged 2 VC along shore, estimate 1 enemy KIA; request to engage fishing boats in ocean that are East of mouth of river. Request was denied; informed Swift Boats, that they are required to investigate fishing boats and report results to this TOC.

Charlie Company's 2nd platoon at grid coordinates BS556823, found a estimated 700-800 lbs of rice that was hidden behind a false wall; also found a tax collector's book. Rice will be destroyed to the non-availability of aircraft for extraction. Book to be delivered to LZ Dottie for evaluation.

C&C helicopter w/LTC Barker aboard, observed & engaged 4 VC hiding in the hedgerow and resulting in 1 VC KIA. Aero Scouts dispatched to pursue 3 remaining VC while Charlie Company's 2nd platoon maneuvers towards VC.

PF on OP George reported to Charlie Company's 3rd platoon, that there is a VC company at grid location BS460873. Requested Arty. Approved and Arty firing on target.

Binh Son District reports that a truck & a jeep are heading South on Highway 1. Did not stop at Binh Son. LTC Barker, Battalion Commander, directed MP Detachment at LZ Dottie to stop these vehicles and find out their destination.
