At 0945 hrs. C&C ship engaged & killed 1 VC that was evading to the Southwest in the vicinity of grid coordinate AT896222. Results; 1 VC KIA. 

01 August 68 1125

Alpha Company at grid coordinate AT914209, found a blood a blood trail, 1 m-79 round & 2 entrenching tools. Also CIA 1 VC, age 15-20, w/o ID card and wearing black pj's (black shorts with white T shirt & black shirt over T shirt). Found in hut.

01 August 68 1200

At 1200 hrs. C&C ship at grid coordinate AT910219, observed and engaged with 2 VC that were evading to the West, and wearing black pj's . No equipment or weapons were found. Results; 2 VC KIA. 

01 August 68 1435

C&C at grid coordinate AT911211 ship engaged 1 VC carrying a machete. VC evaded into a tunnel. C&C ship went down and personnel in aircraft threw a hand grenade into a tunnel resulting in 1 VC KIA.

01 August 68 1550

C&C ship engaged & KIA 1 VC that was evading to grid coordinate AT913224. Enemy was moving South, and wearing black pj's. Approx age is 20; negative weapons & equipment.

01 August 68 1705

C&C engaged 1 VC evading into hedgerow in the vicinity of grid AT931258 resulting in 1 VC KIA. Enemy wore a green uniform with no weapons. Also at grid coordinate AT931256, detained 1 male, age 60 years, and 1 girl aged 12. Evacuated detainees.

02 August 68 0917

C&C ship at grid coordinate AT911224, engaged & KIA 1 VC evading to the South wearing black pj's and negative weapons.

01 August 68 0952

Delta Company's 2nd platoon at 0925 hrs.engaged & KIA 1 VC in the vicinity of grid AT905225. VC wore black pj's, negative weapon & equipment.

02 August 68 1130

Charlie Company at grid coordinate AT905214, found 2 bodies w/ green & brown uniforms in a grave. There are several similar type graves in the are. Element is continuing to search the area.

02 August 68 1155

At 1140 hrs. Charlie Company at grid coordinate AT905214, found 14 additional NVA bodies in 4 foxhole type graves. Believed to have been killed by Arty, 3 to 5 days ago. All in light green uniforms. No identifying patches, insignia, weapons or equipment. Also found 1 round 60mm.

02 August 68 1340

At 1255 hrs. Charlie Company at grid coordinate AT906215, found 1 NVA medical bag w/assorted medicines, 2 NVA brown uniforms, 1 US type T-shirt, 1 bayonet (for M-16 rifle), and parts of chicom gas mask.

02 August 68 1510

At 1410 hrs. C&C ship, while on VR mission, observed a large secondary explosion at grid coordinate AT984113. At 1455 hrs. observed a abandoned VC base camp at grid coordinate AT 894183.

02 August 68 1803

Late Entry; C&C ship engaged and killed 1 VC  that was evading at grid coordinate AT862218. Results; 1 VC KIA.

03 August 68 0735

At 0730 hrs. Bravo Company's 3rd platoon located at grid coordinate AT 933256 spotted 1 VC evading to the North at a range of 200 meters. Fired upon VC and searched the area with negative results.

03 August 68 1230

Charlie Company's 1st platoon, at grid coordinate AT907251, found 1 wounded NVA in a hooch, age 35. Individual has 2-3 day old bullet wounds in his leg & wrist; he was wearing green fatigue trousers. Individual was being treated by a women. NVA states that there were a unknown # of NVA in the area a few days ago.

03 August 68 1315

Delta Company 5/46 Infantry reports observing VC crossing a river at the grid coordinate  of AT933198. (number of VC:6). Air strike was being conducted at grid coordinate AT923193 at time of sighting. Results; 4 enemy hooches destroyed & enemy personnel losses are unknown at this time.

03 August 68 1500

At 1450 hrs. Charlie Company at grid coordinate AT903258, found a tunnel that resembles a jail. Tunnel was on a slope of a hill; approx 20 feet deep & 5 feet wide & 5 feet high w/bamboo bars at the entrance.

03 August 68 1545

Charlie Company at grid coordinate AT907258, had 2 Chieu Hois turn themselves in for evacuation to Tam Ky. Boyh were males, age 55, & one w/old bullet wound. Both were wearing blue trousers one w/black shirt, one w/blue shirt.

03 August 68 2055

Delta Company 5/46 Infantry, observed lights in the vicinity of a air strike earlier today. Engaged lights at grid coordinate AT926190 w/ 81mm mortar. Results; lights out.

Delta Company at 0750 hrs. reports that 5 Chieu Hoi's (2 male & 2 female & 2 children) walked up to LZ Karen and turned themselves in.
04 August 68 0825

Delta Company located at LZ Karen, reported that 1 individual (NVA wearing green uniform) turned himself in with a Chieu Hoi pass. The individual was carrying a M-16 rifle with/serial # 611790 & 1 magazine of ammo.

04 August 68 0940

Interrogation from the Chieu Hoi individual indicates that he is a VC guerilla, and is based at a hamlet at the base of LZ Karen.

06 August 68 0045

At 0020 hrs. Charlie Company's Commander reports a CS grenade detonated in the vicinity of Charlie Company's bunkers. Believed to have been thrown from a friendly bunker near Charlie Company location.

06 August 68 0245

Received message from Commander 198th Brigade to Commander 4/3 Infantry; large enemy force sighted at grid BT398978. Wish to know , how long it would take to prepare all available units to move. Action taken; No exact time given. Message sent to Company's Alpha & Charlie to close all their ambushes on CP locations. Bravo Company Commander notified to prepare for movement from Chu Lai. Delta Company remained at BT429111 bridge location. 2nd platoon H Troop 17th Cav elements called in from bridge to Hill 54.

Message from Americal Division thru 198th LIB; Americal has placed a requirement on 4/3 Infantry for 1 company to be able to move on order anywhere in Americal AO and outside 198th LIB AO with a 1-hour notice.

Delta Company's 3rd platoon engaged 6 VC in the vicinity of grid BT407102; VC were evading North from rice paddy; weapons are unknown because od the distance and poor light; enemy was wearing black pj's and white hats. negative results.

Delta company at grid coordinate BT406104, picked up 2 females, ages, 26 & 40 years. One had a ID and the other has a passport w/ photo. They were carrying tea & water and moving West.  They are being held for questioning.

07 August 68 1855

At 1845 hrs. Alpha Company's 2nd platoon, 2nd squad departed with APC's (113) enroute to bridge night location.

08 August 68 0905

LTC Russell alerted Bravo Company to be ready to move within 2 hours if the need arises.

08 August 68 1246

At 1100 hrs. Do Duc Lang of Diem Pho, at grid coordinate BT 398150, approached gate guard of Hill 54 and offered to sell an Army .45  cal pistol w/serial # 2281555; he also stated that he had many AK-47's for sale. Individual was turned over to Battalion S-2 who took him to Ly Tinh District Headquarters for questioning. Individual is being held at District headquarters until investigation is complete.

08 August 68 1430

Delta Company's 2nd platoon, at grid coordinate BT422104, had a individual approach them and state that he knew where VC were. Element followed individual to a hut & found 1 VC & khaki uniforms. Will evacuate VC.                                                  1525                                                                                                      Delta Company's 2nd platoon found 1 M1 casing & 2 M14 cartridges at the same hut.

08 August 68 2345

Delta Company's 3rd platoon, 1st squad located w/mine detector and one buffer plate & trigger mechanism for chicom 12.7mm  machine gun.

09 August 68 0730

CAP Team 112 reported observing a unknown size enemy force of VC in a old US position in the vicinity of grid coordinate BT 358138.

09 August 68 0910

Battalion S-3 spotted 3 bunkers in the vicinity of grid coordinate BT336137. Requested Aero Scouts to check out the area and destroy the bunkers. Also observed 1 VC in the bunker.

09 August 68 1545

At 1510 hrs. EOD Team destroyed 2 USAF dud bombs from air strike this morning in the vicinity of grid coordinate BT 337137.

09 August 68 2250

Received report from E/26 Engr; bunkers 13-17 report incoming small arms fire from vicinity of grid coordinate BT 465083; Engr returning fire w/small arms & 81 illumination.

09 August 68 2258

At 2255 hrs. CAP Team 124 reported a light contact with enemy force at grid coordinate BT444096.                                    2310                                                                                                       CAP Team 124 reports contact ceased. Results; 1 VC KIA; possessed documents indicating he was a Kit Carson Scout; and was armed with one M-79 GL. Body evacuated to District Headquarters for further investigation.

Alpha Company Commander reported a light beam shining onto their position. Checked with /CAV element on bridge; reply was no lights originating from their position at the bridge.

CAP Team 124 lost contact with patrol; request 1 round of illumination at grid coordinate BT442081. Illumination round was fired.

10 August 68 2150

Alpha Company reports possible probing by 1 VC on the West side of the perimeter. Alpha Company threw 2 hand grenades down the side of the hill & heard individual running back down the hill.

10 August 68 2255

Battalion Aid Station requested a dust off for 1 US EM from HHC w/ temperature 105 degrees. Pickup site; Hill 54. LZ marked w/flashlights East & West and 1 flare 100 meters from LZ. Dust off completed at 2327 hrs.

Bravo Company closing on Hill 54 w/results of night operations are as follows; Detained 6 MAM VCS, captured 1 .30 cal US rifle w/serial # 6322693, 1 magazine for a AK-47, 1 US hand grenade, 1 magazine for a .30 cal carbine, 1 hand flare, 2 M26 frag grenades & documents. Documents informed people to poison water used by US troops & telling their children to gather information from US Troops & the posture of the units on Hill 54.

CAP Team 112 reported that the PF element at grid location BT454079, received small arms fire. Informed CAP Team 112 to contact 1/6 Infantry for support; because PF element is outside of the 4/3 Infantry AO.

Bravo Company found & destroyed 1 60mm HE mortar round forward of bunker # 12 on Hill 54. Round appears to have been there for some time.

12 August 68 1420

Message From 198th LIB; Be prepared to be OPCON to 11th LIB for defense of Quang Ngai City & 3/82 Arty will support. Coordination will be made today with the 11th LIB.

12 August 68 1510

Aero Scouts observed and reported 6 newly built huts & numerous bunkers at grid coordinate BT369069. Arty mission will be called in as soon as a air observer is available.

12 August 68 2000

CAP Team 111 will move its 3 ambushes based on initial report from Village Chief that they would be hit tonight by 100-200 NVA using 2  81mm mortars and 2 .30 cal machine guns. The area of the village is circumscribed by coordinates BT336188 & BT344196 & BT343188 & BT354190 & BT339194.

Bravo Company at LZ Bowman, requested a dust off for 1 US EM from Bravo Company w/malaria. Dust off completed at 1420 hrs.

Charlie Company at grid coordinate BT394138, at 1650 hrs. apprehended 1 MAM, age 20, who stated that he was going to collect wood. Individual was moving West on a bike and wearing a white shirt and tan trousers. w/negative ID/ documents / or weapons. Individual spoke English; he was believed to be checking Charlie Company unit strength.

14 August 68 1415

Request a dust off for 1 US from CAP Team at grid coordinate BT303188. Individual from USMC with / stomach pains & fever. Dust off completed at 1450 hrs.

14 August 68 1525

Alpha Company at grid coordinate BT512163, requested a dust off for 1 US EM from Alpha Company w/malaria.Dust off completed at 1540 hrs.

At 1830 hrs. Charlie Company received 2 sniper rounds that were fired from grid coordinate BT325118; Element returned fire on enemy position w/ unknown results; no friendly casualties.

14 August 68 2035

PF Team 121 reported light contact; illumination on grid coordinate BT475124.                                                                        2230                                                                                            Reference item # 46, summary and results are as follows; CAP Team 121 engaged 30-40 VC in the open; fired Arty rounds of  illumination on grid coordinate BT475124. Fired Arty HE rounds on grids BT457136 & BT461129; Arty requested ground  Commanders initials, they were WWM; gunships request from Brigade at 2150 hrs. to check area; CAP Team unable to get to the area because the river is too deep; gunships arrive on station at 2210 hrs, depart 2245 hrs; Results no friendly casualties; 1 VC KIA  wearing black pj's and negative weapons. CAP Team received a estimated 100 rounds of small arms fire & 1 60mm mortar round (mortar round impacted outside of perimeter.

15 August 68 0843

Bravo Company, located on LZ Bowman, requests a dust off for 1 US w/ back & chest pains. Dust was completed at 0915 hrs.

At 0850 hrs., Charlie Company's 3rd platoon at grid coordinate BT331113, received 6-8 rounds of small arms fire from 5 VC, that were wearing green shorts; returned fire & VC fled to the Southeast. Negative results / no friendly casualties /  3rd platoon is sweeping the area of contact.                                           0951                                                                                                    Charlie Company's 3rd platoon, at grid coordinate BT 331111, found 1 chicom hand grenade which apparently had been dropped by the VC during the engagement earlier.

15 August 68 2115

Bunkers 9&10 reported hearing approx 10 explosions 1000 meters from bunker line; time 2030 hrs. Arty notified. No Arty has been fired.

15 August 68 2205

S-5 reports MEDCAP Team treated 120 personnel; 1400 attended movie. S-5 will return to Hill 54 at 0930 hrs. 16 Aug 68.

15 August 68 2239

CAP Team 121 reported a sprung ambush on 2-3 VC; swept area w/ unknown results; location unknown.

Charlie Company reported that fire was possibly from 2 carbines & 1 automatic weapon. Charlie Company reported elements were searching the area from which the fire was received earlier. Arty mission was called in.

16 August 68 0905

Bravo Company at grid coordinate BT239141, requests a dust off for 1 US from Bravo Company w/ FUO.Dust off called at 0835 hrs and completed at 0855 hrs.

Charlie Company reports at grid coordinates BT334106, found   a 30-40 meter length of punji stakes a trail (2-3 days old).

16 August 68 1955

Favor 112 reported that 2 confirmed VC KIA by H&I program 15 Aug 68 in the vicinity of grid coordinate BT335128.

 There were negative significant events of military importance in the AO today.

18 August 68 0005

CAP Team 11 requested a dust off for 1 US (Marine) at grid coordinate BT303188. Dust off completed at 0035 hrs.

18 August 68 0827

Battalion Commander reports a helicopter downed in the vicinity of grid coordinate BT359089; cause unknown at this time.

18 August 68 0945

Gunships engaged 1 VC w/weapon that was 300 meters South of the downed aircraft; results unknown.

18 August 68 0950

At grid coordinate BT362082, CH-47B aircraft received fire from 2 AK-47's rifles. Extraction of the downed aircraft completed at 0945 hrs.

18 August 68 1100

On first lift aircraft; it took 1 round of small arms fire. Round struck entrenching tool of a individual from Delta Company, causing frag wound in elbow; individual did not require evacuation.

At 1400 hrs. Marine CAP Team, at grid coordinate BT387150, engaged 2 VC , resulting in 1 VC WIA /CIA w/ carbine; the other VC escaped. VC sniped at Team and the Team returned fire.

At 1755 hrs. requested a dust off for 1 EM at Hill 54 w/contusions. Completed at 1807 hrs.

18 August 68 2150

At 2110 hrs. received word from Delta Company that the aircraft shot down this morning had a starlight scope w/serial # 2627, left aboard. Scope was left in a spare parts bag for M-60 MG. Helicopter had name "Black Smith" painted on side of aircraft.

18 August 68 2308

At 2230 hrs. FAT CITY requested a dust off thru 4/3 Infantry for 1 US w/ broken ankle.

Maj McAnaw, Battalion S-3, extracted 1 VCS in the vicinity of grid coordinate BT390144. Individual was wearing black shorts & possessed no ID card or weapon. He appeared to briefing field laborers.

19 August 68 0948

At 0945 hrs. C&C helicopter received 10-15 rounds from 3 VC w/ AK-47's at grid coordinate BT378076. VC had no  shirts on. Aircraft was at a altitude of 20-30 meters & returned to Hill 54, reporting taking on 10 hits. Further reports indicate VC were in gulch at the bottom of a hill.

19 August 68 1115

Charlie Company, at grid coordinate BT382117, requested a dust off for 1 US EM from Charlie Company w/FUO.

20 August 68 0957

At 0947 hrs. Delta Company's 2nd platoon, at grid coordinate BT443097, detained 5  MAM w/ID cards, and was wearing black pj's. Will be checked by personnel from Ly Tin District. Ly Tin District has cleared all but 2 VCS at the Delta Company location; these will be evacuated to District.

20 August 68 1106

At 1050 hrs. the Battalion Surgeon requested a dust off for 1 US EM from Alpha Company w/FUO. Dust off completed at 1105 hrs.

Will evacuate Ly Tin District Headquarters for questioning.

20 August 68 1515

Alpha Company departs Hill 54 & OP 10 for Stand down at Chu Lai.

20 August 68 0001 / 2400

There were negative significant events of military importance in the AO today. No enemy contact within the Battalion AO. 

21 August 68 1105

At 1045 hrs. S-5 & small element from Bravo Company destroyed a dud 155mm round at grid coordinate BT369161.

21 August 68 1110
