  At 311700 the 3-1 Co A was destroying hootches using M-79  from about 30 meters line. Line #68 Berries, Latore A. caught a piece of shrapnel in the left part of his neck.

  Fr Bde./Tate: Weather report, Cloudy with heavy rains, Temp high 73, low-67.Winds 10 to 18 knots.

  Co B 3-2 at time 0600 at grid 722337 had a mech detonate and checked it out at first light with neg results.

  Weather warning - Winds from  N/NW at 20 to 30 knots occassionally to 40 knots. Weather warning until 1000 hrs 03 Jan 71.

   Co D 2-2  at time 1535 at grid 610435 observed two VC on a hilltop. They were working on something near a bush.When fired on by Arty  at 031542  they evaded to the east into the woodline.They were wearing black pj's with the pants rolled up to the knees. The unit saw no packs or weapons.The element observed no effects from the Arty.

   Late entry: Wieczorek, Phillip was extracted From field to Duc Pho. He had a fever of 102.4 with stomach cramps.Message was passed to S1/Vestal to return man to SJH. Wieczorek, Phillip is from A Co 2-2.

   From D Co 2-1 line # 120 Kennedy, Andrew J 7818 has temp of 103.4, nausea, diarhea ans drowsiness. He was extracted by RS bird to Duc Pho on instruction by LTC Coast.

    69th Rangers  made contact at 512402...results 1 VC KIA and at 529397...results 1 VC KIA.

  C 3/1 and PF plt 188 grid 564730.The PF while moving to ambush site received fire from an ambush of approx 30 VC.
 PF returned to OP with WIA. The OP received 3 bursts of AK fire from rge NE.

  Weather to bad to extract company D. If possible we will take them back to Duc Pho.
We do not have facilities to keep 2 companies at LZSJ. Co D is out of chow and it is their 17th day in the field.

   From D Co to CP:Norman T. Fox has a temp of 101 and vomitting, diarea, weak and sore feet. Will be extracted to SJH . Will be accomplished during emergency resupply of rations to D Co.

   From B Co 3-2 PFC Nelson, Anthony A #8189  has a twisted knee. It is swollen and he is unable to walk on it...evacuate to SJH.

  Co C at time 1045 at grid 541429 found 2 hootches, bunker and papers.

  Co A 1-1 at grid 614467 while on patrol found a 82 mm Chinese mortar.

  Co C 1-2 at grid  535427 had a patrol traveling down a N/S  trail....threw a grenade in tunnel. They searched it and discovered a female KIA 18 years old.

Recon 2nd Team at grid 622461 made investgation of area where fired 2 days ago. It revealed a old base camp which had been destroyed by arty. Spider holes found which showed recent use.

C Co 1st Platoon at XD913562 spotted a NVA 10 feet from the LZ. They opened fire on NVA and he retreated SE into the brush. A patrol went into the brush and found 1 NVA KIA and captured 2 AK-47's, 2 chicoms, helmet belt and uniform.

C Company 1st platoon at grid 919553 spotted 1 NVA ...Engaged with small arms fire with neg results.

The NVA threw one chivom and attemped to evade. @ 1020 there were 2 NVA KIA...an unknown amount of 82mm mortar rounds, 1 pair of binoculars and 1 field radio CIA._radio similar to TA-312. Trail in area runs NW  SE and enemy was traveling to the SE and attemped to evade to the NW. Element continuing to RIF in area.
