Spot Report Co B   SJ bunker # 18 reported that they at 300-400 meters heard 2 or 3 rounds  of small arms fire...engaged w/81mm at a range of 400 meters was on TGT....results unknown.

From A Co  1st platoon 010845 May 70.....Element at grid 636448 heard several small  arms fire 200 meters to their N when the ARVN CA into area.

From Co C at 010900 May ...at grid 712424. Have several personnel in sight and are observing them at this time.

Spot Report: B Co on SJ  DTG 011915 May 70. Bunker # 16 spotted unknown quantity of personnel  300-400 meters out. They could tell they were people...engaged with Arty....results unknown/ at 1930hrs bunker # 16 at 500-600 meters, observed 2 or 3 VC/NVA evading to the wood line, bunker # 15 sat they saw 2 and engaged w/Arty & M-60 and asked to engage w/81mm, they fired 15 rounds.

Spot Report: at 0820 hrs 3rd platoon D Co found at grid 786323 a grave on the trail approx 2-3 days old, it was  covered w/ a poncho weighted down w/ rocks. Body dressed in green uniform. Negative equipment and negative wound.

From D Co time 1335 hrs at  grid 778336, D Co has spotted  9 NVA/VC with  packs s/arms and they were also carrying either a RPG launcher or motar tube and launcher. Moving NW...Engaged w/60 rounds & 105 HE ....would like gunship to check out area.

From TMF DTG 021810 at grid 653354  10 personnel  stationary confered by metal 4.2 Exp  15 HE, 105 Exp 30 HE results unknown.

Spot Report: at 0920 hrs D Co while moving on old trail at grid 780320 detonated an 81mm mortar round rigged w/trip wire, round  was placed on ground level....Results: negative.

Spot Report: D Co 4th platoon DTG 041925 at grid 780319, observed 1 VC/NVA at grid 797317, approx 1600 meters to 1800 meters to East w/pack and weapon...engaged w/Arty-results unknown.

Spot Report : at 1020 hrs. Tiger 4 while in ambush posture at grid BS672411 in a hut engaged 1 VC/NVA moving toward them, engaged at 25 meters w/sa fire. Enemy evaded to the N-W. Team found green shirt w/bloody shoulder and blood trail, also found 1 US machete, and US  tobacco, Team will search area.

Spot Report: at 1100 hrs 4th platoon A Co in ambush posture w/CP engaged at grid 712402 2 VC/NVA moving East on trail, enemy evaded to West leaving behind; 1 US canteen, 1 pack made from sandbag. Enemy was dressed in dark shorts, negative shirts and plastic sandals. Element   conducted sweep of area with negative results.

Spot Report: TMF  DTG 060103 at grid 656637 target B string 151,  4 persons moving S to N and confirmed by heat...engaged w/ 10 rounds of 4.2/negative results.

From D Company 061745 at grid 799314. At this grid  D Co 1st platoon spotted 12-15 VC/NVA that were moving down the trail in Valley to South and they looked as if they had packs....could not tell if they had weapons at this distance. Engaged w/sniper using M-14 fire 800-1000 meters. Also M-60... Machine gun fire along with 50 rounds of Arty. Also request emergency re-supply of ammo.

Spot Report; at 0930 hrs. 4th platoon A Co found at grid 4 huts. at grid 659421, 4 huts. Spotted 1 VC/NVA who fired 1 warning shot and evaded North.

Spot Report; at 1030 hrs. 4th platoon A Co while on patrol at grid 659421 4 huts and 2 bunkers 4-5 days old. In the area the following items were found; 7 pairs  of pants, 10 shirts, 3 pairs of socks, 1 hammock w/net, 1 poncho, 1/2 lb of TNT, 1 US bayonet, 1 RA 30 battery, 1 RPG ammo can, 3 AK ammo cans, 2 entrenching tools, 10 cans of milk, 10 cans of mackerel, 4 bottles of soy sauce, 5 lbs sweet pot, 1 1/2 lbs of salt, 1 chicken, 3 btl of rice wine, 4 lbs of tea, 5 lbs of tobacco, 1 lb of coffee, 2 lbs of sugar, 3 lbs of candy, 30 lbs of cornmeal, 2 cans of coke, medical supplies, 20 glucose, 10 streptomycin, 1 US field dress, 2 bottles of mouth wash, 1 bottle mosq repellant and 9 bottles of penicillin

From Company A  DTG 081440 of grid 659421  at grid 659421. A Co at 50 meters North ...a water carrying party had a M-26 thrown at them / it was a dud and element engaged with small arms fire. Results: negative.

Beacon air strike, RN365, on station 1155 hrs, off station 1238, target at grid BS630364, 18 -500 pound bombs 100/100 with results: 1 secondary explosion.

Report from Co A CP; CP, 1st & 2nd platoon checked out grid BS658421 and found a old base camp w/2 bandages w/fresh blood approx 1 day old. Negative other signs of activity.

Spot Report; at 1440 hrs. 4th platoon A Co reported mech ambush tripped at grid BS656396, search of area revealed negative findings.

From radar DTG 102159 at grid 630390. Radar picked up 4 personnel that were stationary. Engaged w/10 rounds of 4.2 with results unknown.

11     May     0833

Spot report: Co A at 0830 hrs at grid BS655428 found a base camp under construction w/ 3 huts, 6'x8'x8'x12' & 10'x12', 3 caved in bunkers 8'x8', not recently used, but the 3 huts were used in the past 24 hours. Will destroy.

11     May     0937

Spot Report: Co A 2nd platoon at 0915 hrs at grid BS656432 found 2  10'x10'   1   10'x18', and 4  12'x12' bunkers w/ excellent overhead cover, 1 L-shaped foxhole 12' long, 1 US pack, 2  3'x3' latrines recently used, found; 1 NVA gas mask, 1 SKS rifle in good condition with SN# 35390 w/4 rounds of ammo. Bunkers estimated 1 month old, but were recently used.  Will destroy.

11     May     1050

Spot Report; at 1015 hrs. 2nd platoon B Co while in ambush posture engaged 4 VC/NVA fishing on river at grid BS789321. Results; 2 enemy WIA, all carrying weapons evaded. Could not pursue due to grass fire that ignited during engagement. Enemy wearing shorts and black pajama tops. Engaged at 30 meters.

A Co Commander reported line # 148 Herrera, LLoyd E. Pvt2 missing from his element. Last seen 1000 hrs. 11 May 70....All personal possessions are also missing.

LRRP Team Ohio in contact w/approx 4 VC/NVA at grid 574472...request from Bde. in contact w/approx 12 VC.NVA. Results; 2 enemy CIA,  2 VC/NVA KIA, 1 pistol, several pistol belts w/chicom grenade CIA. Team extracted at 1345 hrs...with negative casualties.

Spot Report: at 1825 hrs. Tiger at grid 618397, 1 male in black pj's was observed approx 500 meters West walked out of tree line to rice paddy: he looked around and back into the trees...man was carrying a hoe. Approx 5 minutes later 1 female dressed in black pj's carrying water bucket walked out to rice paddy and back into tree line.

Ref # 18, spot  report, from Co B 3rd platoon at 0825 hrs at grid BS782344, set off booby trap of 155 round w/several S/A rounds attached. The element was securing an LZ at the time, the persons were well-dispersed w/some of the KIA's as far as 40 meters from the bobby trap.

 Spot Report: at 1430 hrs. Tiger 1 observed at grid 615399 1 male and 1 female VN's were observed. The KCS told them to stop, both attempted to evade to the SE, the scout opened fire and shot the male in the leg, the female ran into fire of the cover element and was killed. Dust off requested for WIA for 1435 hrs....complete at 1523 hrs.

 Sensor activation string 156B at grid 653357, 8 persons were moving at 2 mph toEW, confirmed by metal. B Btry 6-11 expended 18 HE round 4.2 expended 20 rounds HE.

 From Blue Ghost Red: Time 1135 at grid 595468 made contact with Black Ace 24 . 24 showed Blue Ghost where he took ground fire with W.P. and rockets....Also spotted 2 bunkers and engaged with rockets...couldn't see results because of triple canopy.

 14     May     1840

 Co C   DTG 141805 at grid 603416 captured 1 female POW age 30-35 old, wearing black khaki type shirt and pants she was in a hooch 6'x10'x8' also found 10 lbs of rice and bunker under hooch w/no equipment. She also had a basket w/clothes and sandbag, 1 GI towel, 1 sandbag, 1 white rag., black sarong, 1 c-ration, 1 1/2 lbs ground rice, 2 shoe laces. Beetle nut, 1 additional pound of coarse rice. Negative  ID card.

From Co C  DTG 140000 at grid 603416 Mech ambush which consists of three claymores went off approx 142000 at above grid VC/NVA had additional pair of black pj's and NVA boots. Results: 1 VC/NVA KIA wearing black pj's one 3x5 document with VN writing on it....10 lines.

Dust off requested by Aid Station for Leithleiter with 105 degree fever and vomiting. Dust off completed at 1750 hrs.

Spot Report: From S-4  pad DTG 151925 May 70. A trip flare went off between bunkers  # 1 & # 2 approx 15 feet out...Bunker engaged w/M-79, M-16, & M-60...Bunker # 20 also engaged with negative results.

DTG of event. at grid 647419. 1 male 25 years old and had a wallet with 18 penicillin tablets, ID card, 5 bags of tea, 20-25 lbs of rice,cigarettes, 1lb of salt, US canteen with beverage-rice knife-2 packs of noodles, 3 lbs of tobacco, 1 lb of candy, Ho Chi Minh sandals -maroon pj's- blue underwear-documents with numbers on it ....all carried in a GI water proof bag.

At 1600 hrs Co C  4th platoon  at grid 659409 spotted 2 personnel. Negative packs or weapons.They were moving E to W. When they were spotted and they evaded to the E.....C Co.  pursued  with negative results...could not determine dress.

Spot Report: DTH 0130 May  21 at grid 658537.   5 personnel moving N and heat confirmed...engage string 152 target A...heat confirmed on both targets-engaged w/25 rounds of 4.2 HE shot 2, 10 rounds volleys, still had activation so made correction to grid 656376 & TMF and would like to call it target on string 152...expended 5 more rounds on that grid.

Spot Report: C Co CP & 4th platoon at grid 653412, DTG210558, had a trip flare go off. C Co blew a claymore to engage and will check for results at first light-0620 hrs  neg -ative results.

Delayed Entry from Co D DTG or event  201825 May 70 at grid 755342. Mech ambush 1 VC/NVAKIA (top half left). Dark green uniformage  approx 35-40 years old. US cigarettes and matches lighter chain to chest. Rucksack (sandbag) negative weapons....Enemy was headed East...Rucksack was a sandbag with a string on it, and contained insect repellant. Shirt & pants were a knit material.

21     May     1425

Helix 31 BDA from AS on 692384 dropped 12-500 lb bombs & 6-500 lb Napalm caused 6 fires and what looks like remains of 3 hooches. 1415 hrs.

From A Co 3rd platoon DTG of event 221055 May 70 at grid 703304 & 702302. The 3rd platoon, while on the way to where mech ambush went off...ran across 3 VC/NVA moving East. Element engaged with small arms fire at 25 meters, killing one and the other 2 evaded to the South in the brush line...the two evading were carrying heavy packs-possibly weapons but not confirmed. The KIA was wearing khaki shorts and a dark blue shirt.

22      May     1915

Spot Report: Late Entry: From D Co 2nd platoon DTG 221715 May 70 at grid 768308: 2nd platoon was moving East and observed 2 NVA moving together(1 from E and 1 from W). Point man engaged. Results: 1 NVA KIA-25 years old, 1 NVA evaded to the East. CIA 1 AK-47 sn# 206582 with Chinese writing, and 1 full magazine.

23     May     1523

Spot Report : From Co A at 1450 hrs, 2nd platoon while engaged in recon-by-fire had Line # 48 Carr, Alton D. who was sightly wounded in the right shoulder by friendly fire. Minor injury ...negative dust off requested at grid 687311.

Spot Report: From DTG 232338 by Cox DTG of event 232323 May 70 . A Co' s CP mech ambush detonated and  located at 697310. Results unknown, will check area in am area of mech AP's was engaged w/12 M-79 rounds and 2-81 mm rounds...results unknown.

Dolphin 18 did not take any ground fire...The injured man was in a ambush position at the time Dolphin 18 said he took ground fire....So the door gunner fired...resulting in the WIA of Line # 110. Company Commander States"there was no reason for it". Dolphin 18 reports that he heard shots and crew chief spotted two people on top or behind a berm to the East of 694345, and were wearing no shirts an cut off pants.

Had rubber bag with 2 packs GI matches, metal container of tobacco, piece of blackcloth rubber bag of nuts. (betel presumed) 1 brown hat, 1 GI belt, 2 ponchos, basket (fish catching type), 2 rice hooks...Co C thinks they were waiting to police up Co C garbage. Were 200 meters away when they disappeared... sent element to search at 60 meters. Chased for 40 meters.

Results: 2 NVA KIA. 1st NVA:was wearing long khaki pants, black shirt, Ho Chi Minh sandals, 2nd NVA: white shirt, long khaki pants, Had 5 chicoms grenades (made of mackerel cans). 1 AK-47 KB 1370, 1 AK-47 with folding stock, (10C2437-1955 Russian) 1 parachute from flare, 1 plastic bowl, 3 1/2 pounds of rice. NVA moving light: both had full banana clip magazines: 25-28 years old. Engaged 130 ft..first took claymore blast...2nd man 20-30 ft  back turned and evaded North. Engaged w/sa fire at 50 meters and resulting in KIA.

Spot Report: A Co CP and 40 had a MAP detonate at 1845 hrs at grid 727310. Results: 1 NVA KIA. Approx 20-25 years of age, short hair cut, wearing blue shirt and blue shorts, negative footgear. CIA: 1 web belt w/bronze buckle with 5 point star, 2 pouches from M-79 bandoleer tied on belt. 1 pouch contained 1 round AK-44 ammo...negative ID or wallet, negative wallet papers of any kind. 1 GI sandbag tied to a belt, 1 VN spoon, 2 oz of salt, 2 packs of c-ration coffee, 1 VN lighter, 1 P-38, 1 AK-44 bolt action weapon (sn#C1781) Moving South to North towards RS point.

Hair 3-4 " on top, short on side, 1 GI bush hat with hippie head band, short khaki shirt over T shirt. 1 nylon pistol belt with silver buckle, GI plastic poncho, 1 square piece of parachute, 1 empty GI sandbag-rigged as a pack, 1 GI field dressing....Negative weapons or ID or documents, Personnel was moving West to East  into A Co resupply area-where they had placed the MAP. A new MAP was replaced in the area.

Spot Report: From Recon at 0920 hrs  at grid 672297. Had MAP detonate....Recon CP moved W to check. Received S/A fire for about 10 minutes from West. No casualties or  damage. Found 1 NVA KIA by MAP and killed 1 NVA  w/SIA that had been wounded by MAP. Heard talking and found a bandage on trail in area where they had took fire. Think at least 1 more NVA was in the area but escaped. KIA were 20-25 years old. One in GI fatigue pants, other in black shorts, neither had on shirts. CIA: 1 AK-47w/magazine and 1 SKS, 1 GI pistol belt,canteen and first aid pack,..no documents. Traveling East found 1 US grenade and 1 chicom.

He was carrying a blue pouch of banana's, a machete, 1 US M-33 frag grenade. Platoon was moving North on a large trail, Element observed VC/NVA on trail that was parallel to the large trail. VC was moving N out of banana trees.

Enemy was moving North  and person was 25-30 years old. VC/NVA KIA was carrying a machete... Hair was short on sides and long on top...no shoes. Grid changed from 726327 to 724311.

Sport Report: From D Co at grid 722312. 1st platoon found 2 old hooches were still serviceable, 1 was 5'x5' & the other was 5'x 8'and there were 3-4 bundles of leaves from about 2 days ago. Found 2 bunkers dug 3-4 feet into hill with 2'x 2' opening. Equipment in the area: old cooking pot, bush hat, pith helmet, bottle half full of kerosene. Evidence of several old fires in area.Trail running NE-SW and water within 200 meters. Farther down the hill was an area 200' wide and about 1/4 mile long, all rice paddies, a large garden area, banana trees and potatoes plant(mature). Barefoot tracks on dikes still fresh-4 hoes used to work rice paddies.

D Co 2nd platoon at grid 719315 DTG of event 270758. 1st squad of 2nd platoon found 1 lean-to 9'x9'x4' high, approx 5-6 months old and behind lean-to were holes 3'x3' for protection. Also two hooches 12'x12'x 6' high, approx 9-12 months old on trail running NE-SW. 3 old baskets on the ground. Purple smoke had been dropped in the area. Also while moving up creek bed this morning and observed many cultivated rice paddies that were mixed with grass. Creek was  dammed up and there were troughs going into paddies. Area shows oblivious signs of recent and heavy use.

Believe area has been used recently. Also found 6-6'x6' huts with side deteriorated... Also 8 bunkers 3'x4' w/partial overhead cover. Three tunnels in bunkers 2'x3'. Numerous small trails and one large trail running N-S ...Activity within the last day.

Spot Report-B Co at 1330 hrs, at grid 659407, 2nd squad 3rd platoon, found 4 huts 5'x 10'. 1 hut had cooking utensils and broom inside. Found 1 hut 15' x 15' w/table inside and tunnel under hut. Found 1 tunnel 5'x20'x 20'. 1 cave 40'x10'x25' w/entrances from N-S-E and 1 hole with 3'x4' entrance into room 6'x5'x8', 2 trails coming uphill and 3 down hill into the area. Found power charge for 155 round. 3 full M-16 magazines wrapped in NVA plastic, grave in area. Area used in the last 3 months.

D Co CP at grid 498412,   020800 July: Found 4 huts on one main trail running E-W with branches running S & NW. Huts were in excellent condition and were used in the last 3-5 days. Huts were 9'x12'- 6'8' - 6'x 6' -6' x 6' . Huts were constructed with rice thatched roofs, and sides were made  of grass & dried leaves. Signs of water buffalo being in the  area. Area around base of rock cliff contained equipment: nose of M-79 CS round(dud had been fired). Tobacco  hanging to dry, 1  spear, 1 small cross bow. 1 basket of unhusked rice, and a small amount of cooking utensils.

B Co 2nd platoon at grid 493413 DTG 021145, Element found a wide trail running N-S..... Found 1 brush hut, with a thatched roof  and a cave with a 2'x3' entrance- high enough inside to stand up in hut, also a pith helmet, 1 NVA rucksack and a canteen.....2 pair of black shorts. Trail was  recently used. Cave was used in the last 1-2 days...Found 1 blasting cap w/6" fuse...rice-3 LRRP bags full.

At 0700 hrs at  grid BS490431 Co A spotted 5 VC/NVA w/rucksacks headed SW...Enemy evaded element so no engagement was possible. 5 minutes later 3 more VC/NVA 300 meters North of the above grid and was moving South along the river w/heavy packs..Arty engaged and landed rounds 15 meters in front of lead man...resulting in the group splitting up to the West in the hills and across the open area to a trail in the draw, element is checking out area  at this time.

In bunkers they found: 1 manufactured chicom poncho (green), 1 NVA uniform (green), 1 khaki shirt, 2 rice bowls, 1 had 18 AK-47 rounds & 5 spear-heads. A Co destroyed everything.

From Warlord: DTG Of Event, 070950.  At grid 614472- found fresh footprints on both sides of Song Ve...same footprints were  boot prints going W-E & E-W. At  grid  625468 found large 3 of huts approx 9'x7'. Destroyed some of the huts , but ran out of ordinance....and could not destroy others . 1 hut looked like it was made out of  plywood. Also bundles of straw and bamboo. Had large numbers of benches, which looked like a classroom. Also saw some poncho's and clothing.

Warlord had observed 3 persons in green uniforms entering structure earlier. 2d A/S 1210-1221 found 5 structures & 9 large bunkers destroyed. 3rd A/S 1247-1257 found 4 large bunkers, which it destroyed. 1715-441401 observed fresh trail going N across bomb crater. 440415. New Base Camp-10 large structures, 4 structures were destroyed...1 large structure- 20'x 70', and looked like a Mess Hall or Classroom.

Spot Report from A Co 3rd platoon 2nd squad rec at 1855 DTG of event 17008 Jul 70, at grid BS699301, 1 MAP detonated, with results: 1 KIA, a male 25 years old moving NE-SW on trail....negative head and foot gear, wearing khaki shirt and blue shorts, and had medium length hair, wearing leather belt with brass buckle with no markings, carrying chicom & web pouch, 6 SKS rounds. 1 NVA 1st aid bandage  in US case, 1 US compass case, 6' x 6'foot  NVA plastic, 300  dong, 1 US sewing kit, 1 US razor, 4 Marlboroughs cigarettes (C ration type, & toothpaste).

This occurred about 500 meters to the West of Co A 2nd platoon 2nd squad position, no fire was received by A Company.

D Co 2nd platoon 1st squad at grid BS722316 found 1 hooch 6'x 8' with a  bomb shelter 6'x6' in front of hooch, able to sleep 2-3 people. 5 bunkers 25 meters South of hooch ...all bunkers were found in a draw. In one hooch they found 1 M-60 ammo box and two pairs of GI socks. Age of bunkers-1 year and hutch 4-6 months old. Trail runs SE and has fresh tracks in the area. Hooch used in the last 2-3 days.

Recon CP found 2 105 HE rounds. Rounds still in container, Box shattered. Lot Nr KN 43/33B, Bird dropped box going West at a impact of 250 degrees. rounds have been about 1-1 1/2 weeks.....Recon will destroy in place.

Company C  1st platoon DTG of event 121000. at grid BS749300. Engaged 1 VC/NVA at 50 meters the enemy was moving N-S. with negative weapons. Dropped homemade rucksack and then evaded to the West. Enemy was wearing green and entered into the weeds and brush-Company C followed the blood trail with negative findings. Contents of rucksack: 3 one gallon cans of kerosene-1 full 2 empty. 1 carton VN cigarettes-8 packs, spaghetti, 4 new rice knives in sandbags...Equipment destroyed.

Spot Report: A Co at 1315 hrs at grid BS622554. Element found 11 M-79 HE rounds, 1 US pineapple grenade, 650 M-16 rounds. Found in old .30 cal ammo box, and approx one year old. Also found 40 new 10 round clips (quick loads). All equipment found in spider hole.

Spot Report: C Co 1/20 at 1830 hrs at grid BS619557. Found 2 huts, 1- 25'x15', 1-5'x7'. Believe smaller of the huts is the cooking hut. Both had 2 small tunnels. Found 1 table  & chars inside /  2 tables outside. About 15' from big hut element found 1- 60 mm mortar round in bamboo sticks, and about 15' from the same hut found 1 GI mess kit. Found 2 trails nearby-1 running to the West and the other to the SW. Found 1 trail running N....Found hobnailed boot tracks of several persons & 1 operable Zippo.

141030 hrs A Co found 1-45 gal drum filled w/rice and well camouflaged and in a irrigation ditch. 141040-Co C 1/20 at grid BS613556 found 10 fighting positions 2'x2'x2' and had not been used in several months. 141145 Co C 1/20 found 1 san pan 30' long and had small shrapnel holes in it at grid 627558, This area shows remains of several fires and had the grass matted down where 2 men used for sleeping position.

From A Co 2nd platoon DTG 141515. at grid BS623553 found 8 boats and 5 were wood planks 14' long. 6 were in good condition and 2 were bad condition. 3 boats have been recently been used...all boats were destroyed.

From C Co 1/20 1st platoon  DTG of event 151000 at grid 598553, had 1 VC in black Pj's KIA by M-16 at fire approx 50 meters. He was evading from a small base camp that had 1 hut made from vines 1 foxhole 4'x2' 1/2x 4' and 2 OP's ...man was 27 years old and was carrying a homemade rucksack, and a large knife in a sack...He had some medical supplies and extra clothing, with 10 lbs of rice, also had one NVA canteen.

A Co 3rd platoon DTG of event 151210 at grid 635547 found 1 dug that is 5' deep and 4' high-3' wings to the right and left at the back of the cave. There were remains of a fire and bits of food indicate that area was used last night. Boot tracks found on a trail going E-W....  looks like those of a NVA rubber boot.

A Co 1st platoon at 1400 hrs at grid 634543, found the upper half of an M-16 rifle. The barrel was sawed of half way down. There was no bolt or operating rod handle, also found the right hand guard.

She was afraid because no US had been in the area for along time but had suddenly appeared. She said the VC came from the hills about every 7 days to get rice. She knew of no rice caches in the area.

D Co had secured area around hut and were checking area when 1 NVA walking S-N along stream bed-engaged at 10 meters KIA who was approx 24 years old and wearing a blue uniform and Ho Chi Minh sandals, pack w/ID papers, printed book. Blue shirt green pants-khaki, green GI shorts, pistol belt, 2 chicoms, 1AK-47 ser # 7337999...They will blow up chicoms and shelter.

Spot Report: D Co at grid 621511, 181253: Had one MAP detonate-3 KIA wearing grey shirt & black pj type pants, 2 wearing blue uniforms. They were on a trail going NE-SW. One blood trail, one wallet containing pictures & MACV card and ID card-Valetine card(US). second wallet  unknown at this time. One AK-47 ser #11041869, one M-16 ser# 840952, one M-16 ser# 864894. One man was 20-25 years old and the second man was 18-20.

Spot Report: B Co CP at grid 623494, DTG 221500: Found parts for RPD machine gun: 100 ammo rings & feed tray. Found parts for 51 cal.: buffer gp, 1 carrying handle, 1 sight bracket and mount, and 1 spindle. Also 1 receiver cover for AK47 and cleaning rod for RPG launcher. Were all found on the ground just outside the perimeter covered with leaves. Parts are rusty and are unusable.

From A Co 1/20 1st platoon DTG 230730 at grid 608497. Found 1 sandal -yellow, 1 black pj top, 1 empty bandolier US type. Found 1 tunnel with a opening 2'x3'-it went back 6' and then branched to the West and one branched South. The West tunnel opened into a room 6'x4'x4' high enough for 4-5 personnel. The South tunnel went 10' then up to the surface, it went 6' more and then opened into a room 3'x4'x4' high and had a small fireplace in the room.

Spot Report: B Co 2nd platoon DTG 231415, at grid 625486, Found: 1 hooch 30'x20' wide. Hooch had barb wire on windows and around hooch. It looked like a prison or a place to confine people. 70 lbs of rice & 20 lbs of corn were found near hooch. Corn was polished and in good condition. Both rice & corn were in 5 gal cans covered with brush and straw. 125 rounds of AK in plastic bags covered by rocks..Hooch on Trail which runs N-S (and is beaten down ) Hooch was used 4 days ago....7 typed documents found in plastic bags under rocks outside hootch.

Huts 9-10 months old but had been worked recently...Found 3 C-ration case covers with drawings of Huey Cobra's and AK's showing how to shoot down.  Also numerous papers with Vietnam writing.....1 pot of rice 1/2 gal, 9 AK 47 rounds, 15 sleeping positions 5'x6' long, 2'-3' wide, 1 pair OD pants, 1 blue pair of pants, 2 blue shirts, 1 OD shirt, 1 grey shirt, 1 US pistol belt, 1 NVA mess kit and canteen cover, 2 firing devices made of bamboo, commo wire, and old batteries.

Spot Report: from D Co 1st platoon DTG of event 290940 at grid 600304. found 2 huts 1 old 6'x 10'...1 new 8'x12' also in the process of being built 8'x12'....Found 4 bottles of bug juice, 2 PRC batteries, 15 SKS rounds, 2 GI pistol belts. Some of the pigs and chickens have vacated this area  when the element moved in. The trails in the area are running N-S, with 1 running  E-W. Huts were in the junction of trails and destroyed.

A Co 2nd platoon DTG 291205 July at grid 720311. A Co found 1 hooch 8'x 10'...Inside the hut was a table with rice bowls. Trail goes E-W on a well covered trail-hut is 4-5 months old with no recent activity. Hut was destroyed.

D Co 1st 300945 hrs found a corn patch 25'x50' meters. It had 20 cross-bows rigged up together. They were aimed at chest high and was connected by a vine .....and the vine was set up like a trip wire.....Bows were set off and cross-bows and corn were destroyed....negative casualties.

Spot Report: From A Co at grid 713310 at 1600 hrs. Found 1 bunker 4'x4' w/overhead cover and next to it they found 2 lean-to. 1 had fairly new grass and was green on the roof. The other one was framed w/bamboo and both were 5'x6'. Had 2-3 acre of potatoes .....will destroy tomorrow.

Spot Report-D Co at grid 699305 found 3 6'x 8' huts approx 4-6 months old (used recently). Inside hut they found 1 pt gas, 1 GI machete, 1 GI entrenching tool, 1 NVA pistol belt and bayonet, 1 M-16 magazine w/10 rounds, 1 trip wire-75-80 ft of 18 gauge telephone wire. There were 5 trails leading into the area. Huts were destroyed.

  Spot Report B Co CP & 1 platoon Dtg 311530 at grid 743314, while moving to the South, broke for lunch by a stream.  Element spotted 4 NVA going South to North. 1st & 3rd man had weapons while the others did not. They wore khaki shorts and shirts, two had belts w/NVA plastic, 1 had a pitch helmet, 2 had knives, 1 got away and 3 NVA KIA. 1 AK fold type 1966 PR 4204 2 magazines, 1 AK-47 1964 PR LK9558 2 wallets w/papers. 2 US WIA lines 70 & 145-slight injuries.

  From Bde: DTG received 011215 Aug. Intell: Agent reporting B-2 rating, at grid 748444. Last night-4 US POW's, 30 ARVN POW's with VC guards w/AK-47's. They were in the  31 July 2200 hrs until 010500 Aug. Departed area at 010500 carrying rice & fish-2 bags per man.  on a direct route to grid 727396 and are expected to move 7037 and stay thru the daytime. Person were dressed in black pj's-including US persons,  and appeared to be in good health. All US persons were caucasian...Believe ARVN's where from Duc Pho District. 1 ARVN POW said they came from Nui-Can-Vo, vincinty 7035. US persons were captured a long time ago, since they were not tied. Also recent captured persons are either killed or detained in POW Camp. 15 days ago the same persons w/same mission did the same thing with only a few guards. C Co 4/3 & B Co 1/20 are to be air moved into that area at 011400. Col Barlow will be at SJH in a short time. 4/3 will be in charge of overall operation.

Spot Report: concerning above dust off, from B Co 1st squad DTG 041945 at grid BS 775323, At above coordinates two trails crossed. The 2nd squad of 2nd platoon went on trail to the left and set out a mech. The squad returned to the platoon location and told the 1st squad to set their mech's to the right...since they put theirs to the left, but the 1st squad went out and took the left trail...detonating the mech resulting in 2 US WIA's and evacuated to Bronco by 2030 hrs.

Company C had 3 men get stung by bees-2 were stung in the face, and 1 was  stung on his arm. the 2 that were stung in the face had eyes swollen almost closed & man stung in arm-had trouble moving it.It happened late in the afternoon of August 4th. Spot Report: summation of A's contact-081835.A Co CP spotted 140 plus NVA at grid 731261 moving SE-NW. Personnel moving in groups of 8-12, There were 12 groups and persons were 5 meters apart, groups 10 meters apart moving in columns and moving very fast on a trail in the valley. Were wearing green & black uniforms...Approx 1/2 had weapons  and 90% were carrying packs and or rucksacks. Only small arms were observed & no radios were observed. Engaged w/Arty, after first volley-enemy moved into wood line at grid 731259. Request immediate air strikes. Kept constant Arty until AS arrived...At 2020 hrs, 2 elements of A Co received 1 round each and it was possibly a B-40 rocket, which landed 50 meters in front of their positions at grid 735265 & 736261. At 2035 hrs a element had heavy movement to their front at grid 736261. At 2105 hrs had movement between  grid 740264 & 741259. Negative results from movement.

Spot Report: Co C at 1230 hrs at grid BS704299 found 8 huts 4'x6' made of bamboo & grass and was approx 6 months old. Huts were lean to type w/no roof and located near 4 rice paddies. Paddies are well cultivated and are 15 meters x 20 meters near many trails that run in various directions. Also found tracks  of 8-10 personnel used in the past 3 days and fresh defecation.

Spot Report; Co B at grid BS673276. Engaged 1 VC/NVA moving South at 60 meter distance. Enemy evaded N up the hill: was approx 25 years of age wearing black & green uniform w/sweatband and barefoot. Negative results.

Spot Report Co B at grid BS673273. found a 5-6 man sleeping position used within the last 24 hours-6'x12'w/4 fireplaces in area were also used. Found 1 basket containing 1 NVA canteen, 1 pair of black pants & shirt, 1 poncho liner, 1 rucksack full of cabbage, 2 lbs of rice, 2 dozen bananas and 1 1/2 lbs of crabmeat.

There were signs of chickens in the area. 1 SKS rifle 19642-102482 and in fair condition and operational. There were many trails in the area and running W & NW.

Spot Report: Received by McEwen from A Co 1st platoon received approx 4 bursts of AK auto fire from 2 VC/NVA. Platoon returned M-79 fire, and enemy evaded to the North, could not tell what they were wearing.

Spot Report: Co D 4th platoon at grid BS716248 was stopped when a reinforced squad or platoon of VC/NVA opened up with automatic weapons fire and blew/claymores or threw frags. There were 3 simultaneous explosions  with negative friendly casualties....enemy evaded South. Auto weapons fire was suspected M-16. Action on well used trail running N-S up a ridge and US troops were engaged at 15 meter distance w/explosions and 50 meters by small arms fire.

At 1028 and grid BS700263. Co B 3rd platoon had a Map detonate , resulting in 1 NVA KIA, CIA: 1 AK-47 in excellent condition, 2 chicoms grenades-one with wooden handles (70-54-TN-K) and 1 pineapple manufactured type (386-13-69 T), 1 NVA pistol belt, 1 hammock, 1 NVA poncho, 1   4.2 inch illumination parachute. NVA was medium height and build and was moving down the dry stream bed....he had a fresh haircut with close sidewalls.

Spot Report: Co C at grid BS719252. Point element was moving SW down the trail when either a claymore or frag detonated and they received 60 AK-47 rounds and possible M-16 rounds. Enemy was approx 25 meters from point element. Estimate 4--6 persons evaded to the SE. Found 30 meters from blast area a booster from RPG....4 US slightly wounded from the explosion and not dusted off.

C Co called target list in giving target grinds and times to fire them, called to man in charge of FDCof Co D . The Kac's were broken down by recon's RTO. The data was worked up by man in chargeof FDC (WUNDERLICH) Data was given to Sgt of mortar section. The Sgt put data on the gun, also broke down the charges to charge 1. the charge was directed by data of FDC. The data was correct in deflection and elevation, but was wrong on # of charges. Charge 2 was correct, according to the table. When the section was ready to fire, they attempted to call C Co to inform C Co. They could not reach C Co on the radio-they tried on D Co. internal push  81 section called D Co. CP asked them to contact C Co. on CMD freq. The RTO of D Co. CP called 1 time and was unable to reach C Co. CP  D Co. 81 section did not wait for C Co.to be alerted as they were trying to stay on schedule requested. They fired a round and it landed in the center of C Co perimeter........400 meters short of target.

From Co A 2nd platoon at 1140 hrs. at grid BS 742243: 2nd platoon had just started moving W down a hill when they ran into unknown number of NVA. They tripped a early warning device made from a can and rubber band. They continued slowly when they met  and...engaged at 75 meters 3 NVA by semi M-16 fire from point man. Enemy returned fire with AK auto ..2 full magazines. Results: were 1 US WIA. Enemy wearing pitch helmets and all 3 were observed having weapons that are believed to be AK-47's.

Spot Report: Recon platoon at 1520 hrs. at grid BS721252. were moving into area where they had previously spotted 2 VC/NVA. They reconned by fire due to rough terrain. Believe enemy evaded to the South. Found 4 new huts & bunkers with overhead and a lot of grass being dried for use in making huts.

Ref item #21, additional information: POW 25 years old, and was engaged on the trail at 50 meters. Trail was running SE-NW...CIA: 1 chicom, inside pack was parachutes-from 4 105mm Arty flares , 8 pieces NVA plastic poncho. Had green shirt, black shorts, no head or foot gear. Companion evaded SE, had negative weapon, and wore same clothing plus bush hat.

Co D 2nd platoon at grid BS711247 walked into a MAP resulting in 2 US WIA evacuated. The platoon was disoriented approx 700 meters...they sent their location as BS707244 and were supposed to be moving South. They were instructed not to have any MAPS out today.

 From  Bde Cpt Green to 4/3 TOC (McEwen) POW was Recon Squad Leader of 1st Squad 2nd Co 403 Sapper Bn with a strength of 45 men. At time of capture he was leading a patrol of 10 men to Recon US positions. Unit is approx 1 dayWest of place of capture in the vicinity of Bay Sau Slope and Hon Hoa.The reason unit was long out of contact w/US is shortage of food. Also persons were on resupply mission.

From Ba To: received LZSJ 1800 P105A at grid BS564398 at 201300 hrs. Enemy engaged w/platoon & w/RPG's & small arms fire. Enemy was 200 meters away, had dug-in fighting positions. Enemy broke contact to East under heavy fire  from gunships and Arty, No friendly casualties...unknown enemy casualties.

From Bde (Norris): POW captured by A Co located at 91st Evac at Chu Lai source said 40th Co has 3 platoons -recon w/15...sapper w/20....transportation w/10 men, source said 2 squad per platoon. Co has 45 AK-47's, 6 B40, 3x 82mm, 1 x 60 mm,  1 RPG launcher, and source knows of no other unit in the area.

Co B 3rd platoon at 0915 hrs. at grid BS695257. 50 meters North of this location element found a cave by a stream bed with a opening of 6'x 4' which narrowed to 2' x  2' of solid rock material. Inside 3 rusty metal cannisters 30" long x 4" with flip top approx 25 # inside cannister a projectile approx 28" long 1st 14" OD in color like 81mm round. On back end was plastic part with holes in it.  Back part like 105mm cannister. Numbers on rounds 75-60, 28-66 .

Spot Report: Co D 2nd platoon at 0915 hrs at grid BS708241.  found 7 ccollapsed 8'x 12' bunkers and 5 hooches were new. 3 were just framed -all were destroyed. 18" commo wire was found along with 15 potatoes, 2 corn cobs. On the trail running NW-SE there was a blood trail approx 3 days old. Their scout said that boot tracks on trail were possibly made by approx a platoon of NVA moving South..

Spot Report: Co D 2nd platoon at grid BS706244 found what appeared to be an 8' x 12' classroom  w/ benches. There was barbed wire in the area and the scout thinks it is a sapper school. 2nd platoon is destroying all structures.

Spot report: from Co D at grid BS706244. 2nd platoon found 10'x  8' x 10' bunkers with built in stoves and a wash area. This area was in approx 2 weeks ago. There were trails going in all directions that showed use in the last week.

Spot Report: from Co D 2nd platoon found one 51 caliber machine gun. It was broken down into its main parts. Will call back with more details. It was in fair condition, slightly rusty, all parts except tripod. Had 2 circular type sights. Serial # A209.

Intell from Bde Kiernan, from Nghia Hanh grid 633589, observed extensive sampan travel every night on the Song Ve River, in the direction of S-N sampans are loaded while moving in that direction. At 2300 hrs they stop at a bridge location 6155, than move to what appears to be a load off point approximately grid 655576 which PF's observed 100-500 flashlights. When sampans return they are not loaded cargo is unknown.

Sandbag, with pack of tobacco, 11/2 lbs of dried potatoes, HCM, 3'x5' poncho, and 5oz of salt. Moving SE when Map went off.

C Co 4th platoon on DTG 281915 at grid 482708. engaged 1 VC/NVA at 150-170 meters moving North. At 290715 found body. KIA wearing black shorts and shirt and Ho Chi slippers. Also had one fish trap2' long and 6" in diameter.

C Co 1st platoon at grid 484708 onDTG 291620. Engaged 2 VC/NVA. Results: 1 KIA VC/NVA. The second man evaded to the South , towards the CP at grid 485715. He is believed to be wounded. The 1st platoon is maneuvering to capture second man. Dead man wearing blue shorts and no shirts or shoes. Carrying a blue khaki shirt. The one that got away is believed to be carrying an M-16 or SKS. Approx 30 meters away when engaged w/ 10 rounds.

Late entry from C Co Spot Report on DTG 292000. 1st squad 1st platoon had a MAP detonate at the above time. A hasty search of the area results in one KIA female-14 years old, no  weapon, she may  have been carrying a pack. Will check area at first light.

Made of home made chicom grenades w/trip wire above ground.Whole blood was needed. Dust off was requested at 0955 hrs and completed at 1010 hrs.
